Cardamom essential oil (Elettaria cardamomum) is actually from the ginger family, and steam distilled from the seeds after they’ve undergone a long drying process (over 3 months!) to get the best levels of natural chemical constituents possible. Although it can be sourced from many locations around the world, Guatemala is widely known to have the best growing conditions to produce the most potent oil. The fragrance of the oil is so interesting, my first feeling was that I could breathe. “It smells like a spicy Eucalyptus.” Cardamom is well know for its benefits to the digestive and respiratory system.Something important to note about cardamom: It’s generally gentler and safer for children than other oils and so I feel safe for dogs and cats. I tend to avoid some digestive or respiratory oils, such as Eucalyptus or Peppermint, because they have a very strong smell and can be slightly overpowering to our four legged companions. Cardamom can be a great substitute for many digestive and respiratory needs.

I like to break up the word Cardamom into Carda and Mom. Carda meaning the heart and upper chest and mom the maternal nurturing element of existence. I recommend diffusing Cardamom oil in your home if your dog or cat feels abandoned. The abandonment may be the result of being adopted and going to a new home or possibly the loss of a family member or another pet in the household. In these situations I suggest blending Cardamom with either Lemon or Wild Orange essential oils.
Emotionally and spiritually, cardamom essential oil is wonderful for both people and our companions to regain control when we feel overwhelmed. It is especially beneficial for dogs/cats with a long history of anger or aggression. Diffuse Cardamom and Bergamot to create a peaceful environment.
