essential oilsApplying essential oils can be a wonderful experience for both you and your companion. Pure essential oils are potent, so 1-2 drops is a sufficient dose. Put 1-2 drops in your hand, gently rub your hands together, and pet your dog or cat. (Note: for cats, allow most of the oil to be absorbed into your hands. Then, pet your cat. Your cat has benefitted from the essential oil if you can smell it on him or her.) Petting your dog or cat anywhere on his or her body will be effective as essential oils are readily absorbed into the skin. To cover a larger area of your companions body you may want to dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil or apricot kernel oil .

Many people mistakenly believe that using carrier oils somehow reduces the effectiveness of the essential oil, when in fact, there are many benefits from diluting oils. Dilution increases the ability to apply essential oils to a larger area of the body, enhances absorption through dry skin, and prevents possible sensitivities. It is never wrong to dilute, especially when using oils with a more potent chemistry or if you are using an essential oil on yourself or your companion. Diluted essential oils are just as powerful as undiluted essential oils and the carrier oil will help your dog or cat’s coat to stay shiny.
