You may be surprised to learn that of all the toxic environments to which your cat or dog may be exposed, your home might be the most dangerous.

The typical modern home has more chemicals, gases, and natural toxins than anything your dog or cat is likely to come across while roaming the neighborhood, yet most of us are blithely unaware of the dangers posed by such seemingly innocuous products like air fresheners and furniture polishes.

The Natural Defense Resources Council tested 14 plugin air fresheners and found 12 of them to contain “phthalates (pronounced ‘THAL-ates’), chemicals that can cause hormonal abnormalities, birth defects and reproductive problems.” In addition to the hormone shifters, many contained “allergens and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as cancer-causing chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde.”

Air fresheners may seem to have a clean, fresh scent, but can be irritating to your dog or cat’s lungs and nasal passages.

Most people think that poisoning comes from ingestion, which is common. However poisoning from inhalation or absorption is actually more common. When you or your pets inhale toxic fumes, the poisons go directly into the bloodstream and quickly travel to the brain, heart, liver, and kidneys.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to protect your pet from “chemical overload.” Maybe it is time to “Unplug.”

One way, is to purify the air and make your home smell wonderful by diffusing essential oils. When an aromatherapy diffuser is used, the essential oil is broken into very small particles that circulate in the air. Not only will your home smell good, but pure natural essential oils have a therapeutic effect on both you and your pets.

Essential oils purify the air, promote easeful breathing, restful sleep and create a peaceful environment.
