Maybe you were listening to the news and heard something about diffusing essential oils or went to a presentation on the topic.

So here is some helpful information and some suggestions.

What is diffusing? A diffuser is a machine that breaks the essential oil into very small particles, which are then dispersed in the air. Essential oils can be diffused to change the mood in your home, to purify the air and to get rid of odors.

diffuse essential oilsOne of the most common questions I get from people who are new to essential oils and even from people who have been using
essential oils for some time, is “Can I diffuse essential oils around my dogs and cats?”.

Pure high quality essential oils are safe to diffuse around dogs and cats. I only recommend essential oils that are medical grade, and are carefully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers.

There are two types of diffusers that I recommend a water diffuser and a nebulizer diffuser.

My favorite is a water diffuser that disperses the essential oil into the air with moisture. A water diffuser allows you to measure the exact number of drops that you are using and to easily monitor your animals to make sure that they are comfortable with the aroma. Water diffusers also allow you to easily combine different essential oils and to create your own combinations. They do need to be cleaned weekly.

The other type is a nebulizer diffuser, which requires little maintenance or cleaning. Pure concentrated essential oil is dispersed into the air. The amount of essential oils dispensed in the air is controlled easily with a dial.

Pure essential oils should not be heated or burned. These techniques destroy the healing properties of the essential oil.

Diffusing Essential Oils Around Dog and Cats Tips

  1. Use common sense and avoid oils that you are not sure about or that you would not diffuse around an infant or elderly person.
  2. When diffusing an oil for the first time, diffuse for 10 minutes and monitor your four legged companion. If your animal shows
signs of discomfort simply turn off the diffuser and air out the space by opening windows and doors to let in plain fresh air.
  3. Always diffuse in a space that is open so that your pet has the opportunity to leave the area if they choose.
  4. Only diffuse essential oils when you are home.
